Re: Use of Cell Phones
The use of cell phones in the courtroom has become an almost constant distraction. There has been too many incidents where an attorney’s cell phone has rung not only in the courtroom when a hearing or a trial is in process, but during jury selections as well as opening and closing statements. The use of phones, whether it be to review email accounts, check phone or text messages or answer a call is discourteous not only to the court but to the clients and all those involved in the proceeding.
As such, unless the Court grants prior permission, I am now prohibiting all attorneys from having cell phones turned “ON” or VISIBLE in my courtroom. All cell phones must be “OFF”. There will be no exceptions. Please do not place the phone on counsel table. Phones must be in a purse, pocket or briefcase at all times.
Please focus on your immediate responsibilities.
